STEPS TO DEVELOP A BASEBALL PLAYER
Developing any baseball player is a tough task, but his God given talent combine with his make up (aptitude, work ethic, discipline), will play a big role on how quick he will fulfill his potential.
This are some STEPS that could help with the developmental process:
- Gather as much information as possible about the players background (family, playing career, motivation)
- Create a comfortable environment for the player, you want him focusing only on the workout and how to improve himself as a player.
- At first, is best to just watch and take notes, so you can start creating his individual objectives (film as much as possible in order to go back, confirm what your eyes are telling you and share with the player what you see)
- Meet with the player and have a two way conversation about your notes and the steps to take moving forward, is important to make him part of his developmental process.
- Be critical and open to adjust your plan, always reviewing the workouts, making sure that things are evolving as projected.
- Ask the player for feedback, make questions, create an honest and open relationship.
- Be patient and supportive, evaluate the process and not the result (usually if the process is right the results will be there over time).
